Wii ModChip Released

Posted by ryan

Its been a little over 2 months since the Wii was released and already we are seeing the first modchip released for the system. This modchip is being released by Wiinja. It allows you to play burned games from your region. Unfortunately this will not allow Americans to play Japanese games or vice versa. This chip also boots gamecube backups and imports.

There is no homebrew yet.. but there is another chip rumoured to be released this week. We will keep you up to date and of course let you know how to get them/install them when they become available.

Wii News Channel

Posted by ryan

Nintendo has announced that the Wii news channel will be released this Saturday. The news service will be provided exclusively from AP (Associated Press). News will be displayed similar to the forecast channel using a map view of the world. If you want news from London for example, you simply zoom out, scroll over to London and zoom in.

The Japanese news company Goo will supply Nintendo’s Japanese-language news, while the AP will supply news for the Wii in English, French, Spanish, Dutch, German and Swiss-German.

This is exciting news again illustrating the Wii’s potential to be a multimedia centre as well as an innovative gaming machine.

More details can be found here.

Wii Fan Rap

Posted by ryan

This isn’t exactly Wii news or a cool mod.. but it is a video on youtube that is getting a ton of views. It’s always good to see Wii fans promoting the system and getting creative. The best part is when he talks about Nintendo sending him a new TV. I am not sure if its poking fun or if they really are fan boys, but it is worth watching anyway. The groups website can be found at razmig.net.

Wii Play is a title many owners have been patiently awaiting. Wii Play is essentially an expansion on Wii Sports giving players another opportunity to use their Mii characters. Much like Wii Sports all games are utilizing motion enhanced controls with games like billiards, fishing, shooting range, etc. Possibly the biggest reason you should buy this game, the title comes packed with a Wii remote.

January 24, 2007 – If there has been one game the majority of Wii owners have been patiently awaiting for the virtual console, it’s been Mario Kart 64. This game will be the second Nintendo 64 title made available on the virtual console. Nintendo of America confirmed on Tuesday that Mario Kart 64 would be made available on the US Wii Shopping Channel 1/29/2007.

Mario Kart 64 puts the player in control of classic Nintendo characters driving go-karts and navigating through elaborate Nintendo game-based environments while utilizing special power-ups. This title will forever be known for it’s multiplayer experience. Nothing is more satisfying than firing a red shell and popping your opponents last balloon!

Lose Fat: Play Wii

Nintendo Wii  Documented as a Weight Loss Machine
By Colin Geddes

January 23, 2007 – The first time I picked up a Wii controller and battled my friends at a furious tennis match I noticed I was sweating. Not from the normal gamer sweat spots either (sweating hands, foreheads from concentrating) but from everywhere else on my body. I remember thinking of how cool it was that I was getting a workout by playing video games and actually having fun. I barely noticed that I was doing my body such a service by relaxing and playing video games.

There is a blogger in Philadelphia who has caught onto this idea and  lost nine pounds just from playing Wii Sports. Mickey DeLorenzo dropped from 181 pounds to 172 by playing Wii Sports for 30 minutes daily over a 6 week period. There was no change in his eating or exercise habits—this documented weight loss has been the result of playing Wii Sports only.

After the first Wii Sports boxing match with his wife, Mickey decided to conduct this experiment using himself as the guinea pig. A successful experiment indeed, Reuters has enlisted Mickey’s help in creating Wii workouts.

Surely another reason to go out and buy a Wii, Those of you wishing to shed a few pounds to get beach-ready this summer—GO OUT AND BUY A WII ALREADY! It won’t be long until developers release workout or exercise tracking games—who knows, maybe Nintendo will release an Exercise Channel.

The possibilities are endless. In the meantime, be sure to check out WiiNintendo.net to view Mickey Delorenzo’s progress and take a glance at the before and after photos.

January 22, 2007 - With a game that needs no introduction to most, Nintendo has made available for download the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Wii - Out of stock everywhere

Posted by ryan

Will is still outselling PS3 according to analysts.  In channel check of 52 retail stores, 28 had Ps3 consoles in stock, none had Wii.  This presents some interesting questions.  Do people think the Wii is a better console because it is more fun or more revolutionary?  Are the people buying Wii the hardcore gamers?  Or has Nintendo tapped a new market of people who either aren’t gamers or haven’t been for quite some time?

Sony it seems has shot themselves in the foot by rushing a product to market at an incredibly high price point with very little benefit.  The Blue Ray - HDDVD war is still raging and it makes little sense that sony would include this drive that reportedly cost $350 to include.  The Blue Ray disk wont make gaming better, it is merely a marketing ploy to try and get people to embrace the technology.  You would think they would have learned from Betamax, Mini Disk, UMD, etc.  Its sad that I am actually standing behind Microsoft, as a Linux user I should be backing Sony to win the “console war”.

It has become apparent that many hardcore gamers are buying the Wii and keeping there 360.  Wii has new innovative games which is a reason to purchase it.  It also has a fairly low price tag.  The few games that the PS3 offers are mostly 360 ports and really provide no incentive to someone with a 360 or someone wanting to buy a new system.  I predict PS3 will sink just like the DreamCast.  Sega sold over a million DreamCast on launch but they  made a lot of the same fatal mistakes Sony is making.  Nintendo and Microsoft have WAY deeper pockets than Sony.  Nintendo profits on every Wii sold and is a huge publisher of games for their system which equals huge profits.  Microsoft was selling at a big loss when 360 was first released, but Microsoft can afford the write off, they actually have massive profits as a software company so the only person really losing is the tax man.

Next Christmas will really be the time to judge who won and who lost, but as of right now, Wii appears to be the underdog that will sell the most consoles which is what this game is all about.  360 will most likely be the high end graphics console of choice and that is fine by me.

Driver: Parallel Lines on Wii

Posted by Colin

ESRB seems to think so..

By Colin Geddes

January 19, 2007 – Information has surfaced from the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) that Ubisoft will develop Driver: Parallel Lines, to the Wii. This reliable source is from a post on the ESRB’s official website. Ubisoft has yet to confirm whether this title will grace the Wii console, but one should expect to see some screen shots and game descriptions over the upcoming weeks.

Driver: Parallel Lines has already been released on the Playstation 2 and Xbox back in March 2006. We can assume this game will be an enhanced “Wii-make” that will sport Wii specific controls.

Despite this game being potential “Wii-make” the prospect of Wii Remote-specific controls is enticing. Driver: Parallel Lines is similar in game play style to that of Grand Theft Auto. One can only imagine how immersive the experience could be to flip the Wii Remote on it’s side to drive, then quickly exit the car holding the Wii Remote like a gun!

Lowering Prices in the Lower Hemisphere

Nintendo Australia lowering prices for some big titles
By Colin Geddes

January 19, 2007 – The much criticized price-point of Wii games in the land down under is having a favourable result. Nintendo Australia PR, Vispi Bhopti has assured Aussies that the Wii game prices will drop. Games like Warioware: Smooth Moves, Kororinpa, and Wing Island have been confirmed to retail for AU$79.95 when they are available for sale later this year.

“With the Wii and DS, we’re examining the audience demographics to figure out the best price-point with which to expand the market. We did that with our Touch Generations! games, and we’re going to be doing the same in the future with some Wii titles.”

In laymans terms, Nintendo is acknowledging some of their games are over-priced considering the ages of their customer base. It will be interesting to see if third party developers will drop their prices in order to compete with the discounted Nintendo pricing. There is some unfortunate news for Aussies looking forward to purchasing Excite Truck when it hits store shelves February 22nd. Nintendo plans to set the price at AU$99.95 which is a full AU$20 more than their new game pricing.
