Thanks to Matt for sending this mod in:
I gutted my old Nintendo, put my Wii inside, installed some fun LEDS controlled by the original Power button, replaced the controller ports with Gamecube ones, stuck a Gamecube memory card inside, spray painted it, etc etc. Well, it was worth the hours I put into it and I was hoping you’d post my Youtube video I made for it up on your site. I’m planning on writing some detailed instructions on how to do this, but its much more complicated than you might think due to the space restrictions inside the Nintendo (cutting off parts of gc extension cords connectors as well as cutting all that excess cable and resodering them, cutting a hole for the memory card, shaving one of the four supports so the card fits in, dremeling almost everything inside the original Nintendo, etc). Believe it or not, the Wii can still be taken out of the Nintendo if unscrewed (ie if you need to sync some new wiimotes, or access the sd card slot.) The eject button is available via a small hole in the front which can be poked with a paper clip just like an old floppy disk drive.

August 8, 2007 – Considering this is a hack & mod site it is most important to start with the bad. Nintendo has sent a message to all Wii owners warning “If your Wii console has an unauthorized technical modification, this upgrade could cause inoperability of your console.” News of this firmware update is still fresh, and we’ve yet to test this, or hear any comments on which mod chips are affected or if they all remain unaffected. Update with caution!
On to the good…
There is now a digital clock placed on the main menu reminding players that time flies when they’re inevitably having fun. Another change to the Wii menu will be found on the forecast channel. Now the forecast channel will display the current weather in the channel selection interface. The message board now has a new “Today’s Accomplishments” option to display games you’ve played.
The Wii Shop channel has had a considerate makeover. The welcome screen has been redone, showing four recommended titles. There is now a list of popular titles, and new options to search for games by name, genre, and publisher.
Finally, USB keyboards can now be used to type as opposed to pointing in some channels. The Wii Shop Channel, and memo and mail writing can now utilize USB keyboard support. Unfortunately, the USB keyboard is not compatible with the Opera browser as of yet—but it could be safe to assume this trend will eventually follow onto web browsing.

CyberPyrot: “After so many agonizing defeats playing Far Cry on the Wii I was fed up with the Wii Mote. The Wii Mote just was not designed with FPS in mind and trying to play one you will see how frustrating it can be. My solution to this was to create a hybrid light gun using parts from a Wii Mote and an old school NES Light gun. To my surprise the light gun was amazingly more responsive the Wii Mote. I was able to get a lot further in shorter period of time. Now I am not saying this is a difficult mod quite the opposite actually I simply de-soldered the IR sensor from the Wii mote and put several feet of wire between the two and added wire for the trigger as well. This is a simple mod with loads of benefits. Thanks to AcidMods.Com for help with this Mod.”

Comments (217)I got this message today from one of our site visitors.. maybe some of you have some insight?
I just bought a Wii last week end, it as already been modified with a modchip (I don’t actually know which one it is), but the problem is that my Wii is the Japanese version so I have all my menus in Japanese, I was wandering if there was any modchip or piece of software that can change the operating system to the English one?
I am quite struggling with the Japanese menus and the weather, news and shop channels are all in Japanese as well!!!!! I would like to be able to use the pretty cool features the Wii has to offer.
Please help me… Is there anything already available or is there any plan to do it in the near future?

The Perfect Gag-Gift for any Wii Fanboy…….or Waramp.
by Colin Geddes
April 3, 2007 - Making the Wii accessible to almost everyone was Nintendo’s main goal when designing their nextgen console. ThinkGeek has taken this ideal one step further in developing the WiiHelm!
According to their site, ThinkGeek developed the WiiHelm upon predicting that ‘..the average gaming geek is just not up to the strenuous task of vigorous arm movement for longer than 10 minutes.’
The package will contain the helmet which holds the Wii Remote, and some foot pedals that act as the Wii Remote buttons.
I really can’t imagine how ridiculously uncomfortable it would be to play Wii Sports using my head..I’m positive my neck would hurt far more than my nerdy little arms do after 10 minutes. Possibly someone out there will pick one up, try it out, and post an article to change our minds.
At any rate, check out their site–there’s a movie showing the WiiHelm in action.

XCM released a nice little mod for your Wii on the 20th. Priced at $37.99 USD, you can get a “chrome” or a black case to replace that boring white case.

You can go get one over at http://www.xcmlive.com/. Keep in mind that changing the case involves opening your Wii, voiding the warranty.

They had 100 at the time of me sending this email they have 41 left so be quick!
Update (Feb 26th):
Everything is running at 200%. Our first run production boards are arriving soon and we will be shipping them immediately. On the official launch day of the Wiip, we will also release the source code for the Wiip so you can build one yourself. For all of those who can’t wait, here are the parts you will need: an Atmel microcontroller (we recommend the AT90S2313), a 4-MHz resonator (or crystal), two 22pF capacitors and 4x 220 ohm resistors, along with a DB25 case and solder cup, some pref-board, low gauge wires, etc.
Over the past week we have received a lot of emails. Here are a few of the most common ones:
Is your Wiip firmware based on another modchip?
No, our code was developed and built using by us. It is not stolen code.
How many wire do I have to solder?
At least five. Three for the console connection and the voltage and ground. On the port we have these labeled 1,2,3,V,G. We also have one spot labeled A (Auxiliary) that may be used for an additional feature in the future.
Does your mod work with D2B chipset?
We have not confirmed %100, but we just purchased an off the shelf Wii with such. So the answer is, yes (with an update).
Does your chip come preprogrammed?
Our first run boards will not be preprogrammed with Wiip code. However you can easily program it yourself by connecting the included programmer and attaching it to your computer’s LPT port.
What software do you use for programming it?
Most freeware AVR programming software will work, such as PonyProg2000. However, we are working on our own standalone app that will program it (for Win2000/XP).
Are you offering Pre-Orders?
Up until today, no. But now that we have secured a large quantity components, we are now offering pre-orders (up to 100) here. And yes, it’s a first come first serve.
Does your chip allow for a region hack?
This feature we have not worked on yet. We do plan to code it in or someone from the scene will add support for it.
Do you have a final version of the PCB board available?
Yes, you can download the Gerber files here. And you can print them yourself but you can not sell them. We plan to build and release a few more versions over time.

Mod your Wii for $20 (including shipping)
By Colin Geddes
February 15, 2007 -TCNISO has confirmed the release of an open source / open architecture Wii Modchip called the Wiip. The Wiip, among other things, will allow users to unlock Gamecube Homebrew on your Wii. It will be available for a mere $20 retail (including shipping!) and will appear in their online shop around 2/27/07, or the schematics, code, and software will be available so you can make one yourself for less than $10!
“This mod works by utilizing a cheap and simple microcontroller that communicates with the serial port of the Wii’s hybrid DVD drive and overrides certain parts of the media’s data stream. The most important part of this project, is that it is open source! In addition to releasing the Wiip chip, on this page you will soon be able to download the PCB schematics, Wiip firmware and documentation! We hope by creating this project, other users will make modifications to our code for newer updates in the future (if needed).”
