my semi-accidental wiimote dyeing mod

ok i posted this over in the Hacks, Cracks & Mods section and a few people expressed an interest in a tutorial so here it goes. this was initially intended to be a black wiimote mod but i pulled mine out of the dye early because i like this brown color. everyone mods a black wiimote but how many people have a brown one right? you can leave yours in longer to get it black or what ever color you like. since i didnt take any pictures during the whole process you will just have to deal with a picture of the final result.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/buddha_mjs/wiimote.jpg

materials you will need:
1. wiimote
2. triwing screwdriver
3. cloth dye, the color of your choosing. (i bought black RIT brand clothing dye for $2 at Walmart)
4. thick rubber gloves
5. a pot
6. stockings or something like that to hold the small parts so you dont have to dig around in the dye for them.
7. a second pot to poor the hot dye into or some strings to suspend the parts so they dont touch the hot pot and melt.

WARNING
the dye will stain anything it touches including your hands so wear gloves the whole time during this project. also if you leave the parts in the hot dye to long they could warp so check them often. i take no responsibility for damaged wiimotes or anything else.

ok this is how i did it:
1. use the trywing screwdriver to open the case and take off any of the plastic parts you want dyed.
2. get yourself a pot big enough to hold all the parts and mix the dye with enough water to completely cover the parts. less water and more dye will make the parts darker.
3. put the dye on the stove and bring it to almost boiling.
4. ok now you either have to tie the parts to strings so they dont touch the hot pot and melt, or you need to carefully poor the dye into another pot and submerge the parts. keep in mind that the smaller parts like buttons will absorb the dye faster which is why my buttons are black. also for some reason the top part of the wiimote and nunchuck cases dye slower then the bottom parts so you will have to leave the tops in longer. (you may have to reheat the dye a few times if you poor it into another pot)
5. once the parts are the color you want take them out and wash off the excess dye.
6. reassemble the wiimote and there you go. that simple. you now have a colored wiimote that wont chip or wear off like paint and your wiimote keeps its original shine.

Would this work with anything?  I'd love to do it to my DS or PSP cases... or my dreamcast! big_smile

Re: my semi-accidental wiimote dyeing mod

if you do it with a ds, tell me how it goes, i want my ds to be unique in america like my ceramic psp.  i like the attetion when playing it.

Wiikey chipped wii + felicia blue psp slim = not a good match
Wii + enamel navy ds lite= a wonderful match
the only problem, i sold my enamel navy ds, why? cuz i got bored of it and sat on my desk for two months collecting dust,

Re: my semi-accidental wiimote dyeing mod

if i were to dye a ds lite, (white) only the glossy part which has some kind of clear layer, would you recomment it.  if you do, how long should i leave it in.  will there be a color change like a brighter red to a darker red.  thanks.

Re: my semi-accidental wiimote dyeing mod

wouldnt it be a pretty bad idea to dye a DS?
i mean, what if the hot dye hits the touch screen?
couldn't it warp?

Re: my semi-accidental wiimote dyeing mod

thats why you take apart the ds, there are like 7 parts, the ext. top, ext, bottome, the two corners (one with led the other doesnt) the small rod on the back near the ds slot, the interier, top, and bottom and the button.  i saw a guy do it, it doesnt look good, it doesnt match so im gonna stick with my ds white but i foudn this case that makes your ds seem a different color.  its from hori and you can only import it from japan.  its a case hard case that has color on it.  currently there are only 4, clear, pink black and blue.  i got a blue,  heres a pic of it

i couldnt get the image to work so i posted it on my gmail.  this is public so everyone can see it

if you want i can put more photo of how it looks on the side and all, i got it for 13 bucks total on playasia.com

the inside is white btw

Re: my semi-accidental wiimote dyeing mod

Has anyone else tried this mod...seems to me that without a clear coat or some kind of sealant the color will rub off...
