Chris Hecker Retracts Comments Made This Week at the GDC

March 9, 2007 – On Wednesday Chris Hecker presented a speech entitled “Fear of a Wii Planet” and opened his speech with the now infamous quote “the Wii is a piece of shit!” To briefly recap, the speech bashed Nintendo’s next generation consoles’ effort to recruit non-gamers into the gamer market by producing game controls that are accessible to all ages and abilities.
Apparently Chris Hecker had never been given the staple advice from his mother ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it.’ The very next day he apologized for his remarks by stating that “I do not think the Wii is a piece of shit.” Hecker continued to explain that he was attempting to provoke thought, while being funny.
What is funny, is as it turns out Chris Hecker is a Spore designer, and employee for Maxis which is owned by Electronic Arts (EA). EA happens to be one of Nintendo Wii’s largest third party game developers, and understandably it reflects poorly to have EA employees insulting their business partners.
“It’s obvious everyone at Nintendo is serious about games. To sweep all that away in order to get a laugh from the audience was unkind and uncool.”
What I find most uncool about Heckers comments is the ignorance behind his words. If the Wii was a piece of shit, why is it outselling every console on the market? Why is it receiving critical acclaim for its intuitive control and innovative software? Finally, why is it almost impossible to find them in stock?
Simply, because Hecker was wrong! The Wii is not a piece of shit..the Wii IS the shit! Fortunately, all this Wii bashing has created even more exposure which equates to free advertising. Any publicity is good publicity!

I mean, the graphics are nothing short of well… nothing. It’s just a more advanced Gamecube..

all the people who are bashing the wii in the comments here are assanine, they’re most likely playstation fanboy’s who are made at everybody bashing their system. and if they aren’t then they’re narrow minded. like Mr. Hecker.
The Wii is great for what it is. There is no competition between the 360, and the Wii. They both have fun games, but the Wii is simply a different experience. That’s all Nintendo was trying to provide, was a new game play experience.
It comes down to personal preference…some guys are just too hungover to stand around and swing a controller like a tennis racket! Others enjoy the satisfaction and simplicity. I enjoy both!
i agree the wii is a piece of shit. i own a ps3 and like most new consoles there arent very many games but with time hundreds of excellent games will come out i mean look at the ps1 and ps2. now look at the wii i mean OH MY GOD there are just SOOOO many games which infact came out over 10 to 20 years ago. only good new game on the wii is zelda and even that is a game cube game port at best. let me mention price. sure the wii is cheaper but if you buy another 3 remotes+nun chucks your catching up with ps3’s price pretty fast. wii owners maybe “happy” now but at least 2 years down the track youll be struggling to find any new wii games just like what happened with the n64 and gc. nintendo should stick to their handheld game consoles and quit trying to win a race that they lost when games went 3D
Im goin to have to disagree Mr.Judge. In my opinion nintendo DEFINED 3d games, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Zelda OOT, etc….Sound familiar? All excelled in control in both the controls and in camera. Then you have some twitchy ps1 titles that came out later. Plus yea the controllers are xpensive but so are the ps3s and the 360’s for that matter! Ok so if you buy three controller sets for the wii itll cost you a pretty penny. Now add up the price for the Ps3 and then add three more controllers…But then again what game besides Resistance is there to play good enough on multiplayer? Cant think of anythin…..? Me either. But im not bashin the ps3 im savin up now to buy one. Its just yu up ther ^, need to think things a little better through and like alfatrion said dont be mad cuz you couldnt get one.

so wat the wii has already sold 5,200,000 and the Xbox 360 with a 1 year lead 9,523,000 and the PS3 2,320,120 so the Wii goes past the halfway in a fraction of the time the 360 has been out and the PS3 is below the halfway of the Wii
yeah thats it. im bitter because i couldnt get a wii. i had secured one preordered at eb games which also happens to be where i work but decided to cancel. i just gave up on nintendo a long time ago. i bought a n64 then, not long after game production stopped. The same thing happened with the gamecube. the wii may have high selling figures but lets not forget the ps3 has yet to be released in various other countries of the world. i must admit that the ps3’s price tag is ludicrously high but it really will ensure a good 5 or 6 years of enjoyment out of it whereas the wii on the otherhand no doubt will only last you a mere 2 years if your lucky or maybe longer if youre still caught up in the past playing nes,snes and n64 games on it. in response to the question “why are you on a wii site?” im keeping an eye on the wii mod chip as i already modify psps, ps2s and 360’s.

Blu Ray is the next dvd, We havent even reached any where near the 1080p as far as graphics and psp networkin is a hidden goldmine. PS3 And i am afraid that if Ninty just keeps releasin games like Warioware an soon Brain Age the Wii will get fast very quick. But the wii can be cool too, i have never seen my little sistr play a video game ever since we teased her about her useless motions with the N64 on Mario Kart. But she loves my Wii pretty soon my dad will too. Its an everymans game and thats why i bought it.

-> Well, some people actually didn’t forget about it… You know, the sales figures NPD released were comparing the sales of the Wii and 360 in Japan and USA with the total sales of the PS3, since it’s not released in Europe yet. The Wii is the best-selling home console in Feb., even if you adjust the markets.
And I don’t know why the Wii would stop being interesting after 2 years.

The wii is beating the PS3 and the 360 becuase it a cheaper and smaller last-gen system. You shouldn’t compare the Wii to the Ps3 or 360, sales will drop off on the Wii once theres no good games for like 2 years.

Yeah yeah, I just want to see everybody’s feelings about the Wii in 2 years time. Thats when all this “innovation” is played out and all the games become boring, and people get tired of graphics that date to Gamecube-quality. Sure, right now its fun, new, and innovative. But the system can only go so long with innovative controls before it all starts to feel the same. Look at the DS. Even though the DS is successful, its not successful because of the touch-screen. Its successful because its another game-boy! Look at any game that comes out for it, all the touch screen functions are just tacked on, and never adds to the experience. one of the best games on the system is New Super Mario Bros. Which barely uses the touch!
Innovative… HAH! Just give it time people. Mark my words… 2 years from now… “Wii is a piece of shit!” will be the words coming from all gamers once they are tired of playing mario, zelda, and metroid by waving their arms like jackasses.

Why does it outsell? Because it’s cheap as hell. Graphics-wise the Wii is a piece of shit. A regular xbox has better graphics. No one is denying that the controller system is cool … but that doesn’t make a console good.
Lets face it, just Wii is just a gamecube with better controllers.
And people need to get off the PS3’s case. “There are no good games, your just mad!”. Everyone knows that Sony releases some of the best titles available to gaming. Every console has a lack of games when it first comes out.
A year down the road from now, the 360 and PS3 will have trampled over Gamecube2.
