Wii Hardware Update Stops Mods

Posted by ryan

It seems Nintendo has finally caught on to the fact that people have been able to mod their wiis. In the new versions of the Wii they have blocked the current generation of chips by physically removing three connections which were used to connect the chip and allow it to hack the drive software.

It is probably only a matter of time before this is figured out as well.. but it looks like for now the best bet for homebrew and backups is having a first-gen Wii. For those of you who have one already, I am sure they will start going for a premium on ebay soon.

FYI, someone has already found way around this, they cut the chip down with a dremel tool to expose the metal points on the chip, reconnected the points together with a wire, and then proceded normally to install the chip.

yeah, but that sounds like it has a much larger probability of bricking

NOPE YOU Guys, I just finished putting the WiiKey in my clipped 3 leg pin. Modding is only impossible for the newbies out there. The modchip works. And what Jakor said is true. I did that method and it works. you really need a dremel from walmart and a really steady hand and about 30mins of eye popping carefulness. It’s not a larger part of bricking, that’s more to people who like to rush things. With the new modding techinque, you need alot of time to get it done. Took me a total of 3 hours, but soon it’ll be about less than an hour.

Shows how much you know. Stick with your primative button pressing console and STFU. If someone wants a Wii let them buy it cuz you know you can’t make anything remotely close you fatty.

hmmm…im not to sure you can check if these are the latest wii’s. the only way you can check if you can mod them is by opening up the console and check if the three wiring’s have been removed or not.

There is a list of serial numbers to avoid and to get a hold of of the Wiis. But my research at the PSX Scene forums, i’lve come up with the conclusion. Wii’s that were bought before Mid-May 2007 are uncliipped wii’s. Wii’s bought after mid may and to present now are the clipped wii’s. I bought mine’s in Mid June, as my local Walmart had it instock, I got the first box of the 6 that was instock. Brought it home and to my dismay, it was the clipped wii’s. So i went back to Walmart the next day and got me a Dremel ($50) that had the right piece I needed to carve away the IC chip. Right now, the wii still works great!

    WII cant handle homebrew…

the system itself compared to a pc is like Pentium 1..

    if that much

What are you talking about? Do you know anything about the wii? Of course it can handle homebrew! But the firmware is encrypted and we have to wait untill someone decrypts it. just give it time. You should be amazed at how fast people’s mods are coming out.

Actually with a 750 Mhz CPU utilizing and interesting and downplayed single-core but mutiple 8kb cache. …she got more kick then a pentium 1…sheesh…the wii is comparable to an original xbox speed (733Mhz Pentium 3) and functionality wise…the little ATI hollywood chipset though…still can’t play with NVIDIA Geforce 3…in my humble opinion

Yeah, why don’t they do SOMETHING besides playing backups. And when live play is enabled when Pokemon comes out, will that brick chipped consoles? I just don’t see anything happening here. Backups are working, so is that it? Wow, the work here is done, let’s close up shop and work on the next console…I visit this site daily and there is nothing happening

they do actually, but only the wiikey supports it at the moment. i was reading that the wiikey can actually run old school backups (nes, snes, etc..) from the sd card. but before i read that, my dumb ass bought the wiinja… witch aside from running wii back ups, does nothing… fuck…

Don’t worry about your install. Hella easy to swap out the chip. Just have a steady hand, and a 15watt soldering iron from RadioShack (what I used). Swapping the chip for a cyclo or a wiikey is easy.
